North Rhine-Westphalia: SPD considers solar obligation for existing buildings to be unaffordable

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The solar obligation planned by the future black-green coalition for North Rhine-Westphalia from 2026 on existing buildings could be very expensive for private individuals from the point of view of the opposition SPD. For the mandatory construction of a solar system, other sensible energy-saving measures such as new pans or insulation would then possibly be left behind, said SPD parliamentary group leader Thomas Kutschaty on Monday in Düsseldorf.

According to the black-green coalition agreement, the solar obligation should apply to new private buildings from January 1, 2025. From January 1, 2026, the solar obligation will also apply to existing buildings in which a comprehensive roof renovation is carried out.

According to Kutschaty, the coalition agreement also does not provide an answer as to how landlords of apartment buildings should deal with the solar obligation. These would then suddenly become electricity providers and would have to register a business. All of this is still completely unclear. "And what I lack is the appropriate financial support, the funding commitment," said Kuchaty. "This is not thought through to the end."
