North Rhine-Westphalia: State parliament publishes report on shots in Dortmund

Düsseldorf (dpa/lnw) - The North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament published a report by the Ministry of the Interior on the fatal shots at a 16-year-old refugee in Dortmund on Friday. Several media had previously reported on the content of the paper on Thursday.

The report had revealed new details of the investigation, which, according to Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU), represent a "new situation". Among other things, the investigations – which have so far been directed against the shooter – have been expanded to include four other police officers. Three had aimed at the youth with pepper spray and tasers, the fourth officer had directed the operation.

In addition, according to the interior minister's report, it is now being examined whether the investigation into the police officer with the submachine gun will be expanded to include manslaughter. So far, the officials are being investigated for bodily harm resulting in death.

The police were called to the courtyard of a youth welfare facility in the north of Dortmund on August 8, where the 16-year-old was holding a knife with a 15 to 20 centimeter blade to his stomach. The operation initially ran as an intervention in a suicide attempt. A police officer shot the youth six times with his submachine gun, he was hit four times and died, according to the new report. According to the paper, it is unclear whether and how the young person approached the police officers.
