North Rhine-Westphalia: Strikes at university hospitals: New rounds of negotiations agreed

Düsseldorf (dpa/lnw) - In the dispute over a collective bargaining agreement for employees at the university clinics in North Rhine-Westphalia, the collective bargaining parties have agreed on eight new rounds of negotiations until June 14th. The Verdi service union in Düsseldorf announced that the talks that were interrupted on Tuesday would continue on Friday (today).

"We welcome the timeline of the negotiations that has been agreed with the employers. In order to win back the trust of the employees, fast and reliable negotiation results are important," said Gabriele Schmidt, Verdi's state chairwoman. In return, the union has promised to stop further bed and ward closures during the warning strikes and to use more staff for the emergency service agreements.

In the wage conflict that had been going on for weeks, Verdi had once again called on workers to go on strike. After nothing had moved for a long time, a first round of negotiations took place on May 20th between the trade union and the management boards of the six university hospitals in Aachen, Bonn, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Essen and Münster. The employers suspended negotiations on Tuesday.

The employees of the six university clinics in North Rhine-Westphalia are demanding binding personnel assessments for all work areas and a load equalization for understaffed shifts. Employers understand the goal, but there is still a particular lack of nursing staff on the market.
