North Rhine-Westphalia: The mentally ill gives up - crane occupation ended

Münster (dpa / lnw) - A mentally ill man occupied a crane in Münster for almost three weeks - now he has given up. The city announced that he ended his action on Sunday evening and left the crane. Apparently, his strength had left him, he voluntarily descended and was received by a private security service, said Wolfgang Heuer, the city's head of public order. The man was handed over to the police.

The man had manned the crane since July 25 and refused to negotiate with the city. According to observations by the city, he left the crane in between, but as soon as a security officer approached, he fled back upstairs. Photos show him scrambling around the outside of the crane. The man was sentenced to a suspended sentence by the district court of Münster in August 2021. He had threatened and insulted neighbors and repeatedly littered his garden with tons of rubbish for years.

With the occupation, he paralyzed a construction site on a main artery. According to the city, the site should now be better secured: The action of the past few weeks was therefore the second time that the man occupied the crane.
