North Rhine-Westphalia: the number of unemployed is increasing: also because of refugees from the Ukraine

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The number of unemployed has increased significantly in North Rhine-Westphalia. A total of almost 658,000 people were registered as unemployed in June in the most populous federal state, a good 20,000 more than a month ago, as the NRW regional directorate of the Federal Employment Agency announced on Thursday. The unemployment rate rose from 6.5 to 6.7 percent.

The main reason for this, in addition to the seasonal end of the spring revival on the labor market, is the inclusion of Ukrainian war refugees in the basic security for job seekers. "In June there were around 19,000 people who we know fled to NRW after the Russian attack and who have been registered with us as unemployed for the first time this month," said Bianca, Managing Director of Labor Market Management at the NRW Regional Directorate crystal.

Since June 1, all Ukrainians who have fled have had the opportunity to apply to the job centers for basic security benefits for job seekers. They had previously received benefits under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act.

According to Cristal, the newcomers from the Ukraine will find a receptive labor market in NRW. "Many are well trained - and there is a lack of well-trained specialists in NRW on the job market in many sectors," she said. Historically, unemployment in NRW remains at a low level: over the past three decades, it has only been lower in the boom years of 2018 and 2019.

A total of 175,000 vacancies were reported to the employment agencies in NRW in June. The cut-off date for the census was June 13th.
