North Rhine-Westphalia: University tunnel racers convicted of illegal races

Dusseldorf (dpa / lnw) - A 24-year-old driver has been convicted of illegally racing through the Dusseldorf university tunnel. The Solingen native was fined 3750 euros by the district court for two races, as a court spokeswoman said on Monday in Düsseldorf. In addition, his car was confiscated as an instrument of crime. He will also lose his driver's license for three months.

According to the judge responsible, he was one of the three drivers who had competed in races with their high-powered cars on Autobahn 46 at the end of January and mid-March 2021. They were traveling at speeds of 156 and 176 instead of the permitted 80 kilometers per hour. Witnesses had informed the police and the tunnel cameras provided the necessary photos as evidence.

During house searches, the investigators came across extensive evidence and chat histories from a WhatsApp group called "PS-Niederrhein". It contained numerous dates for races and films of them.

On the other hand, the 24-year-old was acquitted of the charge of speeding 305 on the Autobahn 3: On the one hand, there was no speed limit at the point in question, on the other hand, it could not be clarified whether he was really the driver at the time in question. The 24-year-old had denied all allegations to the end. The car does not belong to him, but to his mother. The verdict is not yet legally binding.
