It was hot and gardening enthusiasts had to water the lawn and flowers copiously: the first summer month of June, with above-average temperatures and little rain, kept the soil dry. However, there were no major storm events like in May in NRW.
Offenbach/Düsseldorf (dpa/lnw) - June, as the first summer month, brought comparatively high temperatures and little rain in North Rhine-Westphalia - as it did nationwide. As the German Weather Service (DWD) reported on Wednesday in a preliminary balance sheet, the average temperature in NRW was 17.7 degrees, 2.3 degrees above the long-term mean of the international reference period 1961-1990.
The weather service in the federal state registered 265 hours of sunshine - 81 more than the average. The amount of rain in June, on the other hand, was well below average at 65 liters per square meter (reference 84).
Throughout Germany, the DWD repeatedly observed local violent thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in June. There were no particularly conspicuous national individual events in June in NRW. However, just 14 days earlier - on May 20th - an extreme storm had hit NRW and caused devastation in East Westphalia and especially in Paderborn with more than 40 injuries.
