North Rhine-Westphalia: Wesel district prohibits water withdrawal from bodies of water

Wesel (dpa / lnw) - In view of the low water levels, the Wesel district has banned the pumping of water from rivers, lakes and streams. The rule applies from Wednesday to December 31, 2022 and affects all surface waters in the district area, the district announced on Tuesday. The ban applies to private and commercial use and to ten water withdrawal permits granted in the past.

It is therefore forbidden to pump out larger quantities to irrigate fields in agriculture, but also smaller quantities for private gardens. Exceptions apply to watering cattle and scooping by hand. Private wells are also unaffected.

"The reason for this measure is the drought that has been going on in the region for months," said the district. An improvement is currently not foreseeable. The ban should be monitored. In individual cases, a fine of up to 50,000 euros can be demanded for violations.
