According to the court, the man is accused of stabbing a 24-year-old and her four-year-old son - whose father he was - on a dirt road near a port in Cologne. He then threw the bodies into the Rhine. According to the indictment, he wanted to prevent his family from learning about the child, the court said.
The woman's body was found in November in the port of Cologne's Niehl district. It was quickly assumed that it was a violent crime and the police set up a murder commission. A day later her dead son was discovered - also in the Rhine.
For the trial against the German, the court has scheduled hearing days until the beginning of September.
