North Rhine-Westphalia: World War II bomb successfully defused in Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - A five hundredweight aircraft bomb from the Second World War has been defused by the explosive ordnance disposal service in Düsseldorf. A total of 200 emergency services, including the fire brigade and the police, were on Tuesday evening in the Unterrath district, as the city announced.

The British dud was discovered at a construction site on Nienburger Strasse. In a radius of 250 meters around the site, about 2000 people had to leave their homes by early evening. Another 3,000 people were affected in a radius of up to 500 meters around the site - they were allowed to stay in their homes until the defusing, but not outdoors.

The streets, which had been closed in the meantime, were released again immediately after the defusing at 10:19 p.m., it was said.
