Dortmund (dpa / lnw) - A project for immigrant women with higher educational qualifications has received the Mevlüde Genç Medal from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. "Women who have come to Germany often have to overcome a whole wall of prejudice and resistance in order to establish themselves in a demanding profession. PerMenti wants to build a bridge for these women, make them and their achievements visible and give them the chance to they deserve," said Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) at the ceremony on Wednesday. "Barbara Wenzel, Mechthild Greive and all voluntary supporters have made it their task to give immigrant women with a good education the chance of a job that corresponds to their qualifications."
The Mevlüde Genç Medal was donated in 2018 to mark the 25th anniversary of the Solingen arson attack. It honors individuals or associations that have made a special contribution to tolerance, reconciliation between cultures and the peaceful coexistence of religions in the spirit of Mevlüde Genç. The Genç couple lost two daughters, two grandchildren and a niece in May 1993 after right-wing extremists threw incendiary devices into their home. 17 family members were seriously injured.
