North Rhine-Westphalia: Wüst opens new Emscher estuary

Voerde/Dinslaken (dpa/lnw) - NRW Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) today symbolically opens the new, naturally designed confluence of the Emscher and the Rhine. The river, which had been heavily polluted with sewage for more than 170 years, was cleared of sewage in a billion-dollar project. Now the mouth of the Emscher has been shifted to the north. In the future, the Emscher water will flow through a 20-hectare river delta into the Rhine.

In addition to plants and animals, this also serves to protect against flooding, as the Emschergenossenschaft announced. The conversion cost around 70 million euros and has been running since 2014.
