Rescued twice in 72 hours: the incredible story of a Syrian mother

Two rescues in less than a week. This Monday, February 13, one week to the day after the terrible earthquake that hit Syria and Turkey, our British colleagues from the BBC reported that a seven-month-old pregnant woman, Dima, who has since given birth to her child, had to be rescued twice. Indeed, after having been taken out of the rubble of her house after the earthquake, she had to be saved, once again, after the partial collapse of her house, in the city of Jindayris (northern Syria).

On February 6, a violent earthquake of magnitude 7.8 struck Turkey and Syria, before violent aftershocks then hit this region of the Middle East. In this earthquake, Dima was slightly injured, indicate our British colleagues. She then gave birth to her child, a boy named Adnan, in a hospital 22 kilometers southwest of her home. After being treated, Dima was able to return to his house... before it collapsed three days later.

Check out this video about Adnan and his family’s story highlighting the devastation caused by Syria's earthquake.

In this collapse, the young child was seriously injured like his mother, who was hit in the legs. The child was severely dehydrated and jaundiced. Fortunately, he was better on Monday. "Adnan's condition has improved considerably. We are just feeding him and [providing] the rest of his needs through intravenous drips,” pediatrician Dr Abdulkarim Hussein al-Ibrahim told the BBC.

Adnan's mother is now discharged from hospital. She is forced to live in a tent with nine other people. Despite the fact that her house was partially destroyed, she was forced to return to her home, due to a lack of space in the shelters available in the region. In just over a week, more than 35,000 people died in this earthquake (and its aftershocks) in Turkey and Syria. The United Nations fears that this death toll will double in the coming days.
