Right-wing extremism: proceedings against suspected right-wing police officers are often unsuccessful

Since mid-2020, the Lower Saxony police have initiated ten investigations into suspected right-wing extremism and racism. In six cases, the competent public prosecutor's office did not find any criminal relevance or the proceedings were discontinued, the Ministry of the Interior in Hanover said in response to a request from the German Press Agency. Most recently, the search of the apartment and office of a police officer from the district of Schaumburg caused a stir. Weapons, uniforms and memorabilia from the Second World War were found on the 43-year-old man. The public prosecutor's office in Bückeburg is investigating suspected violations of the Weapons Act and the War Weapons Control Act.

Politics in Lower Saxony is also dealing with a policewoman who is said to be in a relationship with a neo-Nazi. As early as August 2021, this information was given to a complaints office in the Ministry of the Interior. After checking the police department in Hanover, the woman remained a service dog handler and "Insta-Cop", i.e. a face of the police in social media.

After a publication by the East Westphalia research collective at the end of June 2022, the case will be examined again, according to the ministry. The official was temporarily transferred to the office and released from her activities on Instagram. According to the current assessment of the Lower Saxony Office for the Protection of the Constitution, her partner was still part of the right-wing extremist scene in the recent past, as state police chief Axel Brockmann informed the state parliament's interior committee on July 22. "Bild" first reported on the written information, which is also available to dpa.
