Runway employees show IS gesture

Three young men working at Düsseldorf Airport drew attention to themselves with a gesture that is typical of the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS). The “Bild” newspaper reported on the incident on Friday. A photo on social media shows three men in work clothes standing on the runway and symbolically pointing their index fingers upwards.

According to information from Düsseldorf Airport, the persons concerned were initially denied access to the security area of the airport until the ongoing investigation was completed.

A spokesman for the Düsseldorf police said on Friday morning that they drove to the men's addresses on Thursday. A threat speech was given to two of them, and the third was on vacation. "We'll continue to focus on him - when he's back, we'll also talk to him about danger."

The Düsseldorf Attorney General is not investigating the case, a spokesman told the dpa news agency on Friday. Pointing a finger is not a criminal offence.

The police use dangerous speeches when they receive indications of a possible criminal offense. She makes representations to extremists and hooligans, for example. The officials want to signal that the person is on the screen and that they should not put into practice the thoughts they may have. Addressing the dangerous person is therefore a preventive measure to prevent a possible later criminal offence.

Düsseldorf Airport is the largest in the most populous federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Flughafen Düsseldorf GmbH stated "that the persons affected by the investigations by the Federal Police are not employees of Flughafen Düsseldorf GmbH, but employees of a service provider working at the airport site". The company in question is not working on behalf of the GmbH.
