Today, Wednesday March 15, the Catholic Church honors San Raimundo de Fitero.
He was abbot of Fitero, the first Cistercian monastery in the Iberian Peninsula.
In 1140 he was commissioned to pacify and preserve the Castile border with the kingdoms of Pamplona and Aragon.
Those were times when the Muslim invasion took place and the Christian community was also in danger in Calatrava. The king sends the monks, including San Raimundo and Diego de Velázquez, to defend the square. They were half religious monks and half soldiers.
After settling the territory, they founded the Order of Calatrava.
