Saxony: 1000 butterfly meadows registered in Saxony

Dresden (dpa / sn) - In Saxony, 1000 meadows have now been registered as butterfly meadows. Private individuals, associations, municipalities or companies are committed to biodiversity with the areas, as the State Foundation for the Environment announced on Wednesday.

Certain recommendations for care apply to the butterfly meadows. They should be mowed no more than three times a year. About 30 percent of the area should remain untouched. Biomass and species numbers of insects are ten times higher on meadows that are tended in this way than on intensively mowed areas.

The 1000 butterfly meadows are an important contribution to stopping the decline of insects in Saxony. For a state-wide biotope network, however, more areas with appropriate care would be needed.
