Saxony: 1.6 million euros for garage campus in Chemnitz

Chemnitz (dpa/sn) - The conversion of the old Chemnitz tram depot into a garage campus for the Capital of Culture 2025 is being supported with 1.6 million euros from urban development funds. Regional Development Minister Thomas Schmidt (CDU) handed the decision to the city on Monday. The quarter was newly included in the federal and state program "Growth and Sustainable Renewal", he explained. In this way, the transformation of the area, including its factory halls, into an "experimental cultural site" will be supported.

According to a concept presented at the beginning of the year, business, culture, crafts and science are to be related to each other on the campus. It should deal with topics such as mobility, digitality, urban development, nutrition and inclusion.

The former depot was put into operation in 1880. At that time, the first horse-drawn tram line started, followed later by electric trams. The depot was expanded over the years, but was abandoned in the 1980s. The site is one of several large intervention areas in the city.
