"It's a great honor for me," said the 17-year-old, who is training to be a confectioner in the state capital, at her presentation on Tuesday. She will now be promoting the delicacy nationwide for a year, with a clear goal: "I want to whet people's taste and show how special our Dresdner Christstollen is." He is "the ultimate Christmas ambassador and stands for centuries-old tradition, high-quality ingredients and sophisticated craftsmanship".
Salome is a team player, open-minded and curious about how her colleagues describe her, and the first Sorbian in this position. She grew up in her parents' bakery in Lusatia, a settlement area of the national minority, and has known the profession from a young age. "Both the craft and our Sorbian customs and traditions have left a deep mark on me," she said. In her free time she works on her iconic alabaster white Schwalbe, a moped from GDR times, which she used to rush to her first appointment.
The association has elected a Dresden Stollen girl every autumn since 1995. The applicants must have good grades at the vocational school, brilliant specialist knowledge and a great passion for Dresden's number one Christmas biscuits. "Salome combines these requirements perfectly," said Andreas Wippler, head of the Dresdner Stollen Protection Association. She is "representative of the next generation of our industry".
A stollen girl has up to 60 mandatory appointments during her term of office and also advertises the traditional pastry, whose origins go back to the 14th century, at the Green Week or the ITB travel fair.
