Saxony: 934 kilometers of federal roads and motorways in need of rehabilitation

Every motorist knows roads that are in poor condition and that better deserve the name bumpy road. The Federal Ministry of Transport has now listed the respective renovation needs in the individual federal states.

Berlin (dpa/sn) - According to the Federal Ministry of Transport, 934 kilometers of federal roads and motorways in Saxony were classified as in need of rehabilitation during the last inventory. According to a response from the ministry to a question from the left in the Bundestag, there are federal roads with 755 kilometers and motorways with 179 kilometers. "Saxony has the most motorways and federal roads in East Germany that are in need of rehabilitation," said Leipzig member of the Bundestag Sören Pellmann on Friday, speaking of a "poor record" for the Federal Ministry of Transport.

"We finally have to get a lot more freight traffic off the road and put it on the rails. The truck avalanches are not only destroying our roads, they are also a climate killer," Pellmann emphasized. According to the Ministry of Transport, a total of 8,510 kilometers of federal roads and 5,797 kilometers of motorways are classified as "roadways in need of maintenance". The information for federal roads came from an assessment in 2019 and 2020, that for motorways from 2017/2018.
