"We finally have to get a lot more freight traffic off the road and put it on the rails. The truck avalanches are not only destroying our roads, they are also a climate killer," Pellmann emphasized. According to the Ministry of Transport, a total of 8,510 kilometers of federal roads and 5,797 kilometers of motorways are classified as "roadways in need of maintenance". The information for federal roads came from an assessment in 2019 and 2020, that for motorways from 2017/2018.
