Saxony: A good 75 percent of property tax returns submitted

Dresden (dpa/sn) - In Saxony, a good 75 percent of property tax returns had been submitted by the end of the period on January 31. The Ministry of Finance announced on Friday in Dresden that about 87 percent of them were done electronically. Minister Hartmut Vorjohann (CDU) seemed satisfied with the result. "The declaration rate shows: You can rely on the Saxons. I am aware that the declaration took a lot of time and effort."

The ministry made it clear that those who missed the deadline are still obliged to make a declaration. "The timely reassessment by the tax authorities is a prerequisite for the municipalities to be able to levy property tax based on the new values from 2025 onwards. Property tax is an ongoing, reliable source of income for the municipalities. Many important projects in the municipalities can continue to be financed with it it ultimately benefits its residents," stressed the minister.

The defaulting owners are to be reminded in writing by the tax office in the next few weeks to submit the declarations. The tax offices can estimate the tax bases if the declaration is not submitted, it said. All of this would mean additional work and possibly additional costs for the owners concerned.

In Saxony, the tax offices have to re-evaluate around two million properties and plots of land and issue notifications. The exact amount of property tax depends on so-called assessment rates, which are set by the municipalities. The new property tax will be due from January 1, 2025.
