Saxony: accident in opencast mine: investigations into negligent homicide

Bahretal (dpa/sn) - After an accident at work in an opencast mine near Friedrichswalde-Ottendorf (Bahretal municipality), a 36-year-old is being investigated on suspicion of negligent homicide. This was announced by the Dresden public prosecutor and the police on Thursday.

A 37-year-old died in opencast mining on Monday (February 27). According to prosecutors, the accident happened when the man was standing near a conveyor belt that led to a chute. A truck was to be loaded. After the vehicle had taken its position, the 36-year-old suspect switched on the assembly line "ignoring the care required in traffic".

Because of the fast-moving belt, the 37-year-old colleague fell, was pulled in the direction of the funnel and finally fell into it. "There he was poured over by moving bulk material," it said. The man could only be recovered dead.

The competent Oberbergamt and an expert are involved in the investigation. The dead man is also to be autopsied. According to the public prosecutor's office, the investigations are likely to take a considerable amount of time.
