On average, it is more than three hours a week above the prescribed time, said study director Frank Mußmann from the University of Göttingen on Wednesday in Dresden. A majority of teachers regularly work overtime. The data would confirm previous studies from other federal states. Saxony is still above the national average. A third of full-time teachers work more than 48 hours a week during school hours, which violates applicable protective norms on working hours. This was accompanied by high health risks.

The study was commissioned by the Education and Science Union (GEW). According to GEW boss Uschi Kruse, schools have been faced with new tasks in recent years due to topics such as inclusion, digitization, migration and Corona. "The problem is that the new tasks are still coming on top and because of the teacher shortage, more and more work has to be done by fewer and fewer teachers."
