Saxony: algae: water supply from the Einsiedel dam stopped

Chemnitz (dpa/sn) - The Einsiedel dam in Chemnitz is struggling with severe algae problems. For this reason, it was taken off the drinking water supply for the time being. The water level had been lowered by about 10 meters for at least two weeks so that the algae coatings died off, the state reservoir administration announced on Friday. Accordingly, the past particularly sunny months have strongly favored the development of the algae. As a result, the concentration of odorous and flavoring substances in the water has also increased.

The dam dates back to 1894. Up to 15 million cubic meters of raw water are taken from it every year for the drinking water supply.
