Saxony-Anhalt: abandoned suitcase in Bernburg triggers evacuation

Bernburg (dpa/sa) - A lonely black suitcase in downtown Bernburg triggered a large-scale operation by the police and explosives experts. According to the Bernburg police, they received a call from a witness on Thursday evening who reported the abandoned suitcase at the Eulenspiegel pharmacy near the world clock. Since the police could not clearly identify what was inside the suitcase, the officers cordoned off a large area of Lindenstrasse and Karlsplatz on suspicion of an explosive charge. Both the residents and the customers of the shops had to leave the cordoned off area.

Explosives experts from the police finally gave the all-clear, the suitcase contained only everyday items and no explosive materials. The operation lasted around two hours. A total of ten vehicles from the Bernburg police and the Magdeburg police were deployed. The Mitteldeutsche Zeitung reported first.
