Saxony-Anhalt: AfD parliamentary group proposes Lothar Waehler as vice president

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - The AfD parliamentary group is making another attempt to get a vice president in parliament. This time she is proposing MP Lothar Waehler as a candidate, according to the state parliament's database. The election is scheduled to take place next week in the state parliament.

The AfD has 23 of the 97 MPs in Parliament and is dependent on support from other groups. In recent months, the AfD has repeatedly tried to get a vice president in the state parliament. However, the various applicants had not found approval from the other groups. Several factions had recently made it clear that they did not want to vote for an AfD candidate.

Saxony-Anhalt's CDU won the direct mandate in 40 of the 41 constituencies in the 2021 state elections. Only in the Zeitz constituency did no CDU politician prevail, where Waehler won. The AfD politician is a heating and plumbing installer by profession.
