Saxony-Anhalt: After an explosion in Halle, the police are still looking for a cause

The explosion in the city center of Halle is still a mystery. The police assume an accident, but rule out a gas accident. Specialists continue to look for the cause.

Halle (dpa/sa) - After the explosion on the market square in Halle with three seriously injured people, the forensic investigations continue. The cause of the explosion on Tuesday evening in the public toilet of a residential and commercial building that also houses the tourist information is still unclear, a police spokesman said on Wednesday. According to the current status, a tragic accident is assumed. There are no indications of a possible gas accident so far.

Specialists would examine the site of the event again on Wednesday and assess the damage, said the police spokesman. Two girls aged 12 and 13 and a 51-year-old woman were seriously injured in the explosion on Tuesday around 6 p.m. They came to the hospital.

The affected building - the Marktschlösschen - which is located next to the Marktkirche, is a patrician house from the late Renaissance.
