Saxony-Anhalt: Almost 300 cars stolen in the state within a year

The number of car thefts in Saxony-Anhalt has fallen, but at the same time insurers have been paying higher compensation. That comes from the vehicle theft report.

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - Car thieves stole 294 comprehensively insured cars in Saxony-Anhalt last year, causing economic damage of around 5.9 million euros. This emerges from the motor vehicle theft report, which was presented on Monday by the Association of the German Insurance Industry. Accordingly, the insurers paid an average of 20,200 euros for each theft, which was around twelve percent more than in 2020. The number of thefts, on the other hand, fell by around eight percent.

According to the information, less than 10,000 cars were stolen in Germany last year for the first time since theft statistics began. Nationwide 9805 cars were stolen. In the mid-1990s, insurers were still registering around 100,000 thefts a year, it said. Better technical protective measures such as immobilizers and improved law enforcement have made work more difficult for car thieves. Off-road vehicles continue to be particularly popular with criminals. Nine of the ten most frequently stolen model series were so-called SUVs.
