Magdeburg/Haldensleben (dpa/sa) - On Wednesday, the Magdeburg district court sentenced a 58-year-old man to prison for attempted murder in two related cases and attempted arson resulting in death. The defendant faces a sentence of seven years and six months in prison. The court followed the request of the public prosecutor's office with the verdict, said a spokeswoman for the district court. The "Magdeburger Volksstimme" reported first.
The court sees it as proven that the man poured gasoline on a gazebo in a garden section in Haldensleben and wanted to set it on fire. There were two people sleeping in the building at the time, who were awakened by the strong smell of gasoline. The perpetrator then fled and was arrested by the police a short time later. The judgment is not yet final, an appeal can still be filed.
