Saxony-Anhalt: avian influenza in the Börde district: 20,000 animals killed

Bülstringen/Bad Kösen (dpa/sa) - After the outbreak of avian influenza in a turkey stock in the Börde district, all 20,000 animals were killed. The animals would be properly disposed of on Thursday and Friday, the district announced on Thursday. The blocking of the district road between Wieglitz (Bülstringen municipality) - where the disease broke out - and Uthmöden should be lifted on Friday morning.

To prevent the virus from spreading, a lock was set up at which entering and exiting vehicles are disinfected and decontaminated. The outbreak was officially declared on Tuesday.

Avian influenza is a highly contagious, rapidly progressive, acute and easily transmissible viral disease. Avian influenza - also known as bird flu - can be triggered by various so-called avian influenza viruses. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) estimates the risk of becoming infected with the H5N1 virus, even for people who have been in close contact with infected birds, to be “very low”. However, it can easily spread in bird populations - for these animals it is a deadly danger.
