Saxony-Anhalt: burglaries in the summer holidays: LKA reports higher case numbers

When a lot of people are driven out of their houses during the summer holidays, more and more burglars get to work - also in Saxony-Anhalt.

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - In the summer holidays in Saxony-Anhalt, the number of burglaries has increased in recent years compared to the previous months. "Overall, there was a slight increase in the number of cases in Saxony-Anhalt in July and August at crime scenes in single-family homes and apartment buildings," said a spokesman for the State Criminal Police Office of the German Press Agency. Accordingly, offenses such as burglary and daily burglary were taken into account.

The number of burglaries for single-family homes in Saxony-Anhalt rose from 82 cases in May and June 2020 to 114 in July and August. According to the LKA, in 2021 there was an increase from 70 to 96 cases in the same period. In the subsequent months of September and October, a total of 113 cases were recorded in 2020 and then 89 cases in 2021. This means that the increase in summer is certainly there, but will not subside again at the end of the summer holidays, the spokesman said. The number of cases continued to increase even towards the end of the year, as the dark season arguably creates better opportunities for criminals to commit crimes.

"Contrary to popular belief, burglaries often take place during the day," said the LKA spokesman. For example at school, work and shopping times, in the early evening or on the weekends. For those affected, a burglary in particular is often a drastic experience. Apart from the amount of damage, the general sense of security of those affected is permanently impaired. Because the act is also an invasion of privacy - that is, in the supposed security of your own four walls, the spokesman said. For some, the suffering is long.
