Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - A 51-year-old driver experienced a nasty surprise on New Year's Eve on the Autobahn 2 towards Berlin. Engine failure at the Magdeburg-Zentrum junction forced him to stop on the hard shoulder. According to the police, leaking fuel ignited on the hot engine and the front of the car burned out.
The driver and the passenger were able to get out of the vehicle in time and were not injured. The fire brigade extinguished the fire after a short time. The car was totaled. Due to the extinguishing work, the motorway towards Berlin was temporarily closed.
