Saxony-Anhalt: Christmas market opened: tree with LED lighting

Halle (dpa/sa) - With the switching on of the LED lighting on the Christmas tree, the Christmas market in Halle was opened on Tuesday. Around 90 stalls invite visitors to stroll around the market square and other places in the city. Mayor Egbert Geier (SPD) thanked everyone who helped make the Christmas market possible this year. The retailers' offerings range from Christmas items, knitwear, candles and poinsettias to culinary delights. According to the city, the Christmas market in Halle is open until December 23rd.

The topic of saving energy is the order of the day this year, said the mayor with a view to the crisis. Thus, the lighting times of the market are reduced. This also applies to the Christmas tree. The 50-year-old Douglas fir was reportedly donated by a family. The conifer was previously on a plot of land in a housing estate in Halle.

Traditionally, a Christmas pyramid in front of the town hall is a popular meeting point for visitors to the market, with a mug of mulled wine (4 euros), punch or Feuerzangenbowle. In Saxony-Anhalt, the Christmas markets also open elsewhere before the first Advent, for example in Halberstadt (Harz district). In Magdeburg the time had come on Monday.
