Saxony-Anhalt: Cities attract commuters: Magdeburg in front

Live in the country, work in the city. Even across national borders. This is the case for many Saxony-Anhalt residents. Most commuters come to the state capital. This is confirmed by new figures.

Halle (dpa/sa) - In Saxony-Anhalt, Magdeburg has the most commuters who drive there to work. This is confirmed by new figures from the State Statistical Office. According to this, the state capital had the highest commuter balance in Saxony-Anhalt in 2021 with almost 18,000 employees. This means that around 53,000 people commuted to work in the city than people from Magdeburg to work elsewhere. That was just 35,000 commuters. The difference between commuters and commuters is the balance.

According to the information, most commuters drove to work in Magdeburg in 2021 from the municipality of Hohe Börde (around 3,500 people). Conversely, the municipality of Sülzetal (around 3,500 people) was the destination for the job for just as many residents of the state capital.

Meanwhile, in Saxony-Anhalt, thousands of people continue to commute every day between Halle and Leipzig, around 30 kilometers away - in both directions, i.e. back and forth. At a distance of around 32 kilometers, Leipzig was both the most important commuting (around 5,300 people) and commuting (5,300 people) area for the city of Halle in 2021. Smaller towns such as Naumburg (Burgenland district) and Haldensleben (Börde district) are also the starting point for the work.

According to the State Statistical Office, around 799,000 people were in employment subject to social security contributions in Saxony-Anhalt in 2021 (as of June 30). The proximity to other countries such as Lower Saxony, where the automotive industry is based, is also reflected in the labor market statistics, as a spokeswoman for the regional directorate of the Federal Employment Agency said. The districts of Börde, at 4.7 percent, and Harz, at 5.0 percent, also recently (October 2022) had the lowest unemployment rates in the state. Both districts border on Lower Saxony. In October of this year, Saxony-Anhalt had an unemployment rate of 7.2 percent and Lower Saxony 5.4 percent.
