Saxony-Anhalt: climate activists block roads in Leipzig and Magdeburg

The last generation is blocking roads to draw attention to global warming, in which car traffic is also a big part. On Monday there were also protests in Magdeburg.

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - Six activists from the climate protection movement Last Generation blocked traffic on a main road in Magdeburg at the start of the new week. According to the police, two of them managed to get stuck on the B1 on Monday morning, the others held an "unannounced demonstration at the curb".

The protests began around 8 a.m., and the road was reopened before 10 a.m., a police spokesman said. "The stuck people were removed from the street by emergency services in the presence of an emergency doctor." Appropriate measures would now be taken against all of them, and a criminal offense should be checked for the adhesives, it said. Because of the action, a traffic jam had formed, but the police then diverted traffic going into the city from a large intersection.

A Last Generation spokeswoman rated the campaign a success. "We manage to draw attention to the climate crisis, no matter how small the blockade is." She announced more peaceful blockades in Magdeburg in the near future. The last time there was such a disruptive action was in November of the previous year.

There were also protests on a federal highway in Leipzig on Monday morning. According to the police, the B2/Maximilianallee on the corner of Theresienstraße was affected. There were also blockades in Berlin.
