Saxony-Anhalt: Company wants to produce silicon carbide for the semiconductor industry

Bitterfeld-Wolfen (dpa/sa) - According to plans by investors, high-purity silicon carbide is to be produced at the Bitterfeld-Wolfen chemical site in the future. Silicon Products Bitterfeld announced on Tuesday that it was primarily intended for the semiconductor industry. "We intend to invest several million euros in the next few months," said Managing Director Hilmar Tiefel. Around 50 jobs are to be created. The medium-sized company with 20 employees has roots in the solar industry.

With "Solar Valley", the industry once had one of the largest production sites for solar cells in Europe in Bitterfeld-Wolfen. Silicon Products has entered into a partnership with the French company Zadient Technologies for its new production plans. "We are about to make the leap from the pilot plant to the large-scale chemical plant. We hope to be able to start production in nine months," said Friedrich Schaaff, who manages the company's business with Tiefen.

An annual production of 400 to 600 tons of silicon carbide with a purity of a good 99 percent is planned. The raw material can be used in the semiconductor industry for the production of chips that are required for the electronics industry or electromobility. 300 companies are located in the Bitterfeld-Wolfen Chemical Park.
