Saxony-Anhalt: Death of a 36-year-old after a police operation: autopsy

Weißenfels/Halle (dpa/sa) - An autopsy is to clarify the cause of death of the 36-year-old, who lost consciousness after an argument with police officers in Weißenfels and died in the hospital two days later. The result of the investigation is expected in the coming days, said a spokesman for the public prosecutor's office in Halle on Tuesday. He said there was evidence the man was under the influence of drugs at the time of the arrest. The 36-year-old has multiple criminal records, including drug possession.

The spokesman said that two police officers involved were initially being investigated for assault in office. Investigations against the deceased for attempted burglary and resistance to law enforcement officials would be discontinued. The deceased will not be investigated.

According to the police, the 36-year-old tried to break into an apartment in an apartment building via a balcony on Saturday afternoon. According to the current status of the investigation, the two officers who had been summoned would have asked the man to come down from the parapet. When he was downstairs, the suspect tried to flee and fought back violently. Coercive police measures were used. The 36-year-old lost consciousness and the emergency services took him to a hospital. The man died there on Monday. The investigations are being conducted by the Dessau-Roßlau Police Inspectorate.
