Significantly more people died in Saxony-Anhalt last year than in previous years. Covid-19, which was the third leading cause of death, had a clear effect. Nothing has changed at number one in the statistics.

Halle (dpa/sa) - In Saxony-Anhalt, diseases of the circulatory system are still the most common cause of death. 36.4 percent of deaths last year were due to them, as the State Statistical Office announced on Tuesday in Halle. 7324 women and 6257 men died from diseases of the circulatory system such as heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure and myocardial insufficiency. That was 128 more people than in 2020. At around 22 percent, cancer was the second most common cause of death.

Third in the statistics is Covid-19. According to the statisticians, 1797 women and 2080 men died as a result of an illness with Sars-CoV-2. That corresponded to 10.4 percent of deaths. While 1,200 people died from Covid-19 disease in January and 656 in December, the number of deaths fell to 7 and 6 in July and August, it said.

In 2021, significantly more people died in Saxony-Anhalt than in previous years. According to the statisticians, a total of 18,148 women and 19,141 men died. That was a total of 3,489 people or 10.3 percent more than in 2020. Compared to the pre-pandemic year 2019, there were 4,990 more deaths. The increase was 15.4 percent.

1335 people died from an unnatural death - that was 3.6 percent of all deaths. 882 women and men died in accidents such as injuries and poisoning. 333 suicides were counted.
