Saxony-Anhalt: Europe's best break dancers dance in Magdeburg

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - Europe's best break dancers compete against each other in Magdeburg. More than 230 dancers from 17 nations want to start at the European Breakdance Championships (EBC) on Saturday and Sunday, said Nils Kleber, manager of the breakdance formation "Da Rookies" and co-organizer. "We have applications from Turkey, Norway, Latvia, Sweden, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Poland and also from the Ukraine." This year, for the first time, children are allowed to take part in the European Championships alongside the juniors and adults.

Most of the dancers are even represented among the children and juniors. The new generation is in the starting blocks, said Kleber.

The participants compete against each other individually in so-called battles or as a group. Six professional dancers decide on the best performances in a points system. The preliminary rounds will start on Saturday, in which the best will be selected. The final rounds begin early Saturday afternoon. "There will be real action then," said Kleber. The winners in the children's and juniors' categories will be determined late on Saturday afternoon, and for adults on Sunday afternoon.

Within a short time, the "Da Rookies" had pounded the event out of the ground. Only at the beginning of the year was it clear that the competition would take place in Magdeburg. But everything was done on schedule, said Kleber. "We're looking at a great event now."
