Saxony-Anhalt: Exhibition on the culture of mourning at the University of Halle

Halle (dpa/sa) - An exhibition at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg revolves around grave monuments and their importance for people. After the vernissage on Thursday, the show "The Art of Mourning. Abrasion of Medieval Tombs as an Academic Collection" will be presented in the Central Custody in Halle until the end of March 2023. According to the university, it has the largest collection of tombstone abrasions in Europe. These are "copies" of the design elements of metal and stone gravestones made with wax pencils on paper, known as brass rubbings.

A selection from the university collection of the Institute of History from Saxony-Anhalt, Northern Germany and England was put together for the show, it said. The institute also conducts research on sepulchral culture, i.e. the culture of death, dying and burial. According to the information, the archive contains hundreds of brass rubbings of stone and brass from the Romanesque to the Baroque period. It was said that tinfoil prints from medieval tombstones were also archived.

During the exhibition period, visitors can make an abrasion themselves in four workshops.
