Saxony-Anhalt: Experts expect fewer mosquitoes than in 2021

Rain and heat favor the spread of mosquitoes. In the past year in particular, many people in Saxony-Anhalt complained about the number of stinging insects. Will the "plague" repeat itself this year?

Halle (dpa/sa) - In view of the relatively dry weather so far, experts in Saxony-Anhalt expect fewer mosquitoes than in the previous year. The weather so far has been significantly less rainy than in the same period in 2021, said Daniel Rolke from the State Office for Environmental Protection in Saxony-Anhalt. If the drought persists, this has a negative effect on the mosquito population. Accordingly, he does not see any "mosquito plague" coming to the country at the moment.

In any case, it is subjective whether there is a "mosquito plague" or not. The number of mosquitoes would be difficult to determine. The weather last year deviated comparatively less from "normal" years, said Rolke. In his opinion, the number of mosquitoes was little different than in the years before the extremely hot summer days between 2018 and 2020. People might simply have gotten used to fewer mosquitoes.
