Saxony-Anhalt: fires in forests and meadows keep fire brigades in suspense

Summer time is forest fire time. Favored by the weather, flames quickly eat their way through landscapes - for mostly unknown reasons. Fire brigades were more in action at the weekend to put out the fire.

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - Heat, drought and many blazing flames: Several fires in forest areas and on fields and meadows kept the country's fire brigades in suspense over the weekend. While the emergency services everywhere managed to prevent the fire from spreading over a large area, the causes of the fire were initially unknown, according to the police. Nobody got hurt.

So there were two forest fires on Sunday night on the B107 in the Stendal district. First, for unknown reasons, around a thousand square meters of pine forest between Hohengöhren and Neuermark-Lübars caught fire, shortly afterwards around 120 square meters of pine forest near Wulkau fell victim to the flames. According to the police, the flames were already eating up around three and a half hectares of meadows and fields near Insel on Friday afternoon.

It also burned between Prödel and Gödnitz in the district of Jerichower Land. According to the police, there were three so-called ground fires near a district road. A total of around 300 square meters burned, it said.

Due to the very high temperatures of more than 30 degrees Celsius and severe drought, forest fire risk levels three to five currently apply in all regions of Saxony-Anhalt. This was announced by the Landeszentrum Wald in Halberstadt. According to the German Weather Service, there is no relief in sight in the coming days. It stays warm in midsummer, they said. If at all, there will only be local showers.
