Saxony-Anhalt: giant water lilies could bloom on "Victoria Night".

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - In the Gruson greenhouses in Magdeburg, a special natural spectacle can be observed "with great certainty" on Wednesday evening. On the occasion of the "Victoria Night", which is open to visitors, the giant water lily of the same name is expected to bloom, which lasts only two days. "We have two big buds and one will almost certainly open for the event," said Ludwig Martins, head of the greenhouses, on Tuesday of the German Press Agency. But there is no guarantee.

With regard to the great warmth and humidity that sometimes prevails in the show houses and the heat outside, Martins said: "The water lily house is generally a very warm and humid house." Basically, computer-controlled ventilation works in the houses, but no air conditioning. "Essentially, this doesn't make it much warmer inside than outside," Martins said.

According to the city, the giant water lily almost completely covered the 40 square meter pool with its floating leaves within a few months. In late summer, a bloom develops that only opens for two nights. This unfolds its full splendor at sunset, it was said.
