Saxony-Anhalt: Grain yields less in this harvest year

Halle (dpa/sa) - The grain grown in Saxony-Anhalt yielded less in this harvest year than in the previous year. The Halle Statistical Office announced on Tuesday that the harvest was below average. Compared to the previous year, 0.9 percent less grain was brought in at almost 3.3 million tons. The yield per hectare for grain also fell by 2.6 percent. The comparatively dry spring was the reason for the below-average grain harvest. In addition, the drought of the years 2017 to 2021 is having an effect.

The State Statistical Office recorded a significant increase in the amount of winter rape that was brought in. It was said that 485,900 tons and eleven percent more winter rape than last year could be caught. The yield per hectare has increased by six percent to 38.2 quintals per hectare. The information is still provisional.

There was an increase in the area under cultivation for bread grains such as winter wheat and winter rye. But although the area increased by 3.3 percent, the harvest volume fell by 3.1 percent this year. Farmers were able to bring in higher yields for feed grain this year. There was an increase of 5.5 percent in the harvest volume. It was said that barley was the main reason for the increase.
