Saxony-Anhalt: Haseloff emphasizes the importance of science

Halle (dpa/sa) - Saxony-Anhalt's Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (CDU) has emphasized the importance of science for society. "Science finds its fulfillment in the common good, it is a service to people, it is an authority for political and social advice," said Haseloff during a symposium in honor of the former Leopoldina President Jörg Hacker on Tuesday. That is why they need freedom and the scientists need independence.

The National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina performs an important bridging function between science and society. "Research must not take place in an ivory tower," said Haseloff. Rather, it must seek dialogue with society and the general public.

The National Academy of Sciences provides independent science-based policy advice on socially relevant issues. It was founded in 1652 and appointed Germany's National Academy of Sciences in 2008.
