Saxony-Anhalt: Haseloff: Pensioners need support with energy costs

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - Saxony-Anhalt's Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (CDU) has spoken out in favor of further relief in view of rising energy prices. "Above all, the pensioners also need state support, most of them cannot bear the enormous additional costs on their own," he told the "Magdeburger Volksstimme" (Friday). "This is especially the case in the east, because very few have large reserves or inheritances here." It is also difficult for households with basic security.

"But it will be most difficult for families with children, where the parents work hard but only get small salaries that are just above the basic security," says Haseloff. "You have to shoulder everything yourself. That affects everyone in the lower third on the income scale."

The head of government said that many have not yet received the new energy bills. "Many are now going on vacation again. During the Corona period, German savings grew. That will change by the beginning of next year at the latest. The high energy prices will continue for a long time. We will all notice that soon."

Referring to the sanctions against Russia, which is waging a war of aggression in Ukraine, Haseloff said: "After this breach of international law in February, there had to be a tough reaction. Of course, sanctions should hit Russia harder than us. But after four months of war we see: Putin has staying power. The risk increases that we damage ourselves more." You have to constantly look at the effects, especially since they also affect countries in Africa and Asia. "This is a difficult tightrope walk for Chancellor Olaf Scholz."
