Saxony-Anhalt: Home slaughtering is becoming rarer

Halle (dpa/sa) - Home slaughtering is becoming increasingly rare in Saxony-Anhalt. Last year, 8,212 cattle and pigs were processed into meat and sausages, according to the recently published Statistical Yearbook. In 2020 there were still 8,436 and in 2019 almost 9,000. The trend shows that more cattle and fewer pigs have been slaughtered at home in recent years. Meanwhile, the total slaughter volume remained relatively constant. Last year it was 1140 tons and thus at the level of 2020.

According to the data, home slaughter accounts for a very small proportion of total slaughter. In the commercial sector, 4.56 million pigs were slaughtered nationwide in 2021. There were 6644 in the home slaughter.

In the case of home slaughter, the butcher either comes to the animal owner's farm or the owner brings the animal to the butcher. Meat from a home slaughter may only be consumed in your own household and may not be sold or given away free of charge.
