Saxony-Anhalt: IHK: economy in the north of Saxony-Anhalt worse than ever

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - The mood in the economy in northern Saxony-Anhalt has reached a low point. "The economic condition of the companies in the north of Saxony-Anhalt is worse than it has been since the beginning of our economic survey," said the President of the IHK Magdeburg, Klaus Olbricht, at the presentation of the current economic survey in Magdeburg on Wednesday.

The determined overall climate index is 68.3 points. "This is an all-time low," said the President. "The companies are all unsettled, all very, very afraid of the future, nobody knows how things will continue." Managing Director André Rummel added that there was a cross-sector concern.

The energy problem, which continued to worsen in the course of the Ukraine war, the high inflation and the ongoing distortions in the supply chains caused the economy to collapse, Olbricht continued.

From the point of view of the IHK Magdeburg, there must be a clear commitment from the federal government to "support the local economy with all means". A way had to be found so that the sanctions against Russia would be maintained, but the economy would remain viable. "Although I would always give priority to the viability of the economy in this country," said Olbricht.

"We need federal and state politics. We need the framework conditions to be adjusted, politicians to react to the current situation," said CEO Rummel. A lot has already been done on the part of the state and the federal government, but there is a lack of a coordinated approach and a clear line. "One thing is a fact, the weakening of the economy is not helping us in Germany at all," said Rummel. He appealed to the federal government to take appropriate measures to guide the economy and society through this situation.
