Halberstadt (dpa/sa) - Former Jewish residents of Halberstadt and their families come together for a meeting in the city in the Vorharz region. More than 30 guests are expected, coming from the USA, Australia and Israel, among others.
After a reception on Sunday (11:00 a.m.) in the town hall, they should sign the city’s golden book in the presence of Mayor Daniel Szarata and Secretary of State for Culture Sebastian Putz (both CDU). Afterwards, the guests of honor want to take a walk to the Berend Lehmann Museum for Jewish History and Culture and visit the exhibition there.
According to the institution, the museum collection is largely based on the "generosity of many former Jewish Halberstadt residents." In the past, the museum received, among other things, photos, documents and personal items. The donations enable the house, which stands in the historic Jewish quarter, to tell the 800-year history of Jewish life in Halberstadt. The annual meeting of Jewish families is an important part of the culture of remembrance, it said.
The museum, named after the merchant, banker and diplomat Berend Lehmann (1661-1730), is part of the Moses Mendelssohn Academy, which is based in the Klaus Synagogue in Halberstadt.
