Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - The Magdeburg Art Museum is dedicating an exhibition to the powerful depictions of women by the South African contemporary artist Zandile Tshabalala. After the opening on Saturday in the rooms of the monastery of Our Lady, the show "In search of my mother's garden" will be presented until September 25th. According to the museum, you can see colored figures that the artist depicted in the middle of her everyday life.

The faces of the women are jet black and hardly worked out. In addition, Tshabalala, who was born in 1999, cultivates a refreshingly free use of colours. She wanted to express lightness, strength and self-confidence with her works. All of the women portrayed would celebrate their black identity, it said.

Tshabalala lives and works in Soweto, South Africa. So far her paintings have been shown in exhibitions in her home country, Nigeria, Ghana, Great Britain and Germany.
